Our beautiful Japandi style bathroom is luxury spa bathroom design complete with a steam shower and accessible design features. A bathroom can be a private retreat, and a space for personal care, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Corey, our Creative Director, has a love for steam showers since his first award winning bathroom took 3rd prize in the large bathroom category NKBA International Design Competition in Las Vegas, NV. Background
As Studio Director at Articulated Design Studio, I am using the Fall 2023 ORC top showcase the transformation of a project that has taken months to properly design and plan for. Our aim is provide you with a behind the scenes glance at a luxury bath design project in an 8 article series. I will use this project to illustrate how we work together with our clients and their chosen contractors in an integrated design approach.
This series documents the features and benefits of steam showers as a cornerstone in the future of bath design. Our founder, Corey Klassen CMKBD NCIDQ IIDA, is a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer through the National Kitchen and Bath Association. They are a recognised subject matter expert in luxury bathroom design regarding steam showers, accessible design and living in place. Over the years Corey has contributed back to the design industry at large not only through teaching the next generation of designers, and providing educational content at design industry events across both Canada and the United States. He has also been involved in publications and educational programs for the design industry at large.

Natural stone vs. engineered stone surfaces:
In the realm of steam shower design, the choice between natural stone and man-made materials is a crucial decision.
Both options have their merits:
Natural stone finishes. Natural stone, such as marble, granite, agate and travertine, offers timeless beauty and elegance. Its unique veining and patterns can transform your steam shower into a work of art. However, it's important to note that natural stone requires proper sealing and regular maintenance to protect it from the effects of steam and moisture. If not, it might change colour by turning pink because the minerals in the stone are slowly rusting or the material may effervesce caused by a natural chemical reaction of the stone when in contact with moisture. These natural qualities are apart of the beauty of natural stone, but they may cause expensive replacement in the future.
Engineered stone surfaces. Man-made materials, like porcelain and engineered quartz stone, are designed and tested to endure the rigors of a steam shower environment. They offer a wide range of styles, patterns, and colors, allowing for designers to be as colourful and creative as their projects allow. While they may lack the natural beauty of stone, they can be cost effective make up for it in durability and low maintenance.
As you can see by our site video below from install day of the steam shower. There are a number of ways to prepare the enclosure for the steam shower to function correctly. The user interface control for this project will be located in the built in bench seat. The gallery of images above showcase the materials that were chosen for the bathroom.
In the case of our Japandi style spa bathroom, a porcelain tile was selected. It will be durable and the hue is a perfect match for our historic colour Palladian Blue.
Our history with luxury bathrooms and steam showers
Our Principal Designer, Corey Klassen, has defined himself early on regarding luxury bathrooms, even being interviewed upon the topic of steam showers and biophilic design. Which is why they participated in the Kitchen and Bath Planning Guidelines - with Support Spaces and Accessibility, 4th. ed., which allowed 10 subject matter experts to significantly update the publication for the kitchen and bath industry in both Canada and U.S.. Not only are metric and imperial forms of measurement now included, but also practical considerations for designers to reference when they design a custom steam shower or accessible baths.
Corey has worked with a range of quality brand names that produce steam showers, as well as plumbing fixtures like Brizo and DXV. Corey’s first time speaking at IDS Vancouver was when he wrote and presented and educational talk for the design industry call the Luxury Bathroom CEU for designers in Fall 2014. His participation in an international marketing campaign for DXV by American Standard not only brought him recognition. It was a part of his love affair with steam showers. He even wrote articles for Mr Steam ( a pre-eminent brand in the luxury bath marketplace) as well as created and presented a CEU about steam showers at an international design conference for the kitchen and bath industry called KBIS in 2015.
