MAPPING YOUR DESIGN JOURNEY

Many New Clients Have Never Worked with an Interior Designer Before.

When starting a new professional relationship, there are a lot of uncertainties and hesitations about the role of an interior designer on your project. While we will be working along with your Architect or building designer for a new home design, addition to an existing home, or on commercial projects larger than 5,800 square feet, the subtleties of our relationship are important to identify at the outset.

With clear expectations mapped out in advance, your design journey with Articulated will be rewarding and elevated.

  • 1. Set a project budget

We all attach value to experiences, objects, and even professional services. Interior design and decorating is no different. Without a set of clear financial parameters, Articulated can not effectively plan design work. With a realistic budget in mind (and on paper) we'll be off to the races in no time.

  • 2. Agree on project scope

We complete design projects with a detailed eye. Using our design process as a navigation tool, we will be able to slate timeframes and deadlines from the beginning. While we love it when owners add-on to an existing project, when scope creep occurs, work progress is paused so that our design process is not compromised and important details aren’t forgotten. No one likes egg on their face.

  • 3. Agree on decision makers

While we enjoy sifting through opinions and preferences and ideas just like everyone else, shifting directions in the middle of a project is much more challenging to manage. Agreeing on the key decision makers at the outset of a project is much easier than changing directions later on. When decision makers cannot agree on the design direction we presented, it will result in additional delays and fees.

  • 4. Make confident choices

Making detailed decisions is challenging because you don't want to make mistake, but you are hiring us to make it easier. Our role isn't only to create the spaces only dreamt about, it's also to be your sounding board. Design-by-committee is frustrating for all and changes decisions later on will result in additional fees and delays. By trusting our experience, we’re confident that you’ll be confident too.

  • 5. Be a great team player

New clients become part of our team the minute our agreement begins – this means mutual respect is agreed upon from the start. You know yourself better than we know you and that means positive communication, timely completion of the activities assigned to you, and blocking time in your schedule to work on your project is important. By working in a spirit of togetherness with the same goals and gravitas for your project is always paramount.

  • 6. Stay invested

The colours, the textures, the styles — the overwhelming potential! It can be difficult to stay focused when conceptualizing your dream space, but don't get pulled down by distractions. Invest in your project with focus and determination, and as long as we all stay focused on the end result, we can't go wrong. There will be moments when it all stinks, it happens to the best of us, but there will also be amazing moments and overwhelming joy when everything is done.

  • 7. Value each others time

We could not relate more to our active professional clients: they work hard during the week and have full recreation schedules on the weekends – just like us. We won't be able to read your mind, so ask be prepared to questions and take your own notes. Be focused at design meetings, be prepared and ready 5 minutes before our scheduled time, and ending meetings on-time is mutually respectful.

  • 8. Avoid going rogue

There is a time and a place to be a maverick, but a design project is not it. We get it, you want to see every option but it isn't realistic. Making purchases and creating timelines outside of our knowledge, pay invoices late, etc., means your entire project is affected. While the intention may be to save a bit here, not spend as much there, returning agreements and pay bills late, for example, mean elongated timelines, which will cost more somewhere else.

  • 9. Mistakes will happen

Anything can happen when humans are involved. We often forget that behind every decision, negotiation, conversation, and piece of merchandise there a human keeping it all together. We need to be prepared because we have not met a perfect human yet. Rest assured, when something doesn’t look or perform right, we will stress out about it way more than you.

  • 10. Have a good time

This one is a true must (but rarely ever an issue.) Laughter and joy is infectious and more powerful than the opposite. We find that our love for our jobs and our Clients passion for their homes or businesses always result in something magical and amazingly fun.
